Chapter 12

Cas held Echo as she walked toward the Courthouse. It was easier to talk to the cat while he was in her arms, a foot away from her mouth, rather than five feet below on the sidewalk. “I only have a few clues. One is that, for a reason I don’t understand yet, Sheriff Lloyd isn’t telling the truth about the crime scene. Or the fact that he was driving through my neighborhood the night Titan died. Second, Titan had a nipper stripper for some reason and that could be tied to his death. Third, someone—maybe the real killer—is looking for something Titan hid. They ransacked his room looking for it. And fourth, someone is framing Graham for this murder.”

Echo purred a little as Cas stroked his head but didn’t add anything.

She continued with her stream of consciousness. “I think those are pieces to a puzzle that should make sense, but I can’t put them together yet. Something is missing. I think the next step is to find whatever Titan was hiding. Chances are it was hidden in his guest apartment, or a temporary office the Court gave him to use during his visit, or somewhere else in the Courthouse. Those are all places with plenty of good hiding spots for easy access in a pinch.”

“It will be tricky to get back into his apartment at this time of day. Or his temporary office.” Echo sounded bored.

Cas decided to chalk up his tone to being snug and comfy in the nook of her arm. “That’s true, but we should be able to poke around other spots in the building. It might take a while for someone to notice we’re snooping.”

He didn’t answer but closed his eyes halfway. Echo leaned into Cas’ hand as she stroked his whiskery chin. After they went through the big glass doors at the front of the Courthouse, Cas set Echo on the tiled floor.

He’d been right—the place was bustling. It was around lunchtime, and the lobby was packed with people hustling from one spot to another.

Cas started forward, but an ear-splitting alarm went off. She froze in place. Flashes of red, blue, and white swirled around them like a disco light zooming in on a set of dancers. Cas whipped her head about, hunting for the cause. They were the only ones who’d come through the front door at that moment. She couldn’t spot anything else that may have caused the sirens.

Was Cas not allowed in the Courthouse since failing the magical test? Color rose in her cheeks. She glanced at Echo. He was no help—the cat stood frozen too, one paw up as he’d stopped mid-step. An ear twitched, and Cas wondered if he might bolt and leave her to handle whatever was going on.

But he stayed put, and a moment later, a peacekeeper officer appeared in front of them. He spoke into a radio on his shoulder, and the alarm and lights ceased. “Follow me, please.”

They tailed the officer to a small table at the edge of the lobby.
